While there’s nothing special you need to do to prepare for a pelvic exam procedure, there are some things that your Ob/Gyn may recommend. For instance, you may need to avoid intercourse, douching or vaginal creams for two days before your exam to ensure the results are accurate.

For your comfort, the Mayo Clinic also recommended scheduling your exam when you don’t have your period and using the restroom before the procedure begins. If you ever have any questions about what you should do before a pelvic exam, don’t hesitate to talk with your Ob/Gyn.

If you have experienced any pain or discomfort in your uterus or vagina between appointments you may also want to come prepared to discuss it with your physician or ask questions.

When it comes time for your pelvic exam, you will be asked to remove your clothing, put on a gown and lie on your back. Medical News Today emphasized that being relaxed can help the procedure be more comfortable.

The first thing your Ob/Gyn will likely do is press the lower part of your stomach to feel for abnormalities with your organs. If you feel pain at any point, let your gynecologist know. They will then examine the exterior of your vagina for any signs of swelling or infection. 

Then, depending on your personal health routine, they may complete a Pap test. By taking a sample of cells from your cervix, they can check for abnormalities that could be a sign of cervical cancer or other infections, such as HPV.

The goal of a pelvic exam is to check for any changes to your reproductive system, so your Ob/Gyn may also use other methods to either feel, see or test your organs. If you ever feel uncomfortable at any time during the procedure you should let your gynecologist know so they can stop, ease your worry and decide if it’s best to continue.
